Obituary of Sheffield, Donald Hinson

Donald Hinson Sheffield was born on August 24, 1929 in Mexia, Texas to Luther and Linnie Sheffield.  He was ushered into the presence of the Lord on June 1, 2017 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Flora Hicks Sheffield, M.D.; by his parents; and one brother, Wendell Warren Sheffield. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Lynne and Jimmy Herweck of Pasadena, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Don and Jodi Sheffield of Farmers Branch; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Rob Bratcher of Odessa, Texas.  He also leaves behind grandchildren Josh and wife Katie, Sarah, Hannah and husband Chase, Matt and wife Chelsea, Kendall, Mandie and husband Kendell, Maurie, Millie, Robbie, Anna and husband Mark, Allie, Rhett, Addie, and Meagan and great-grandchildren Caleb, Reagan, Liam, Hope, Colton, Ryder, Elise, Tyler, Carlos, Brighton, Rhettlie, Gideon, and Micah along with numerous nieces and nephews. After graduating from Franklin High School in 1945, Don enlisted in the United States Army at 17 years of age.  He served his country as part of the Occupation Forces in Japan.  On returning to the United States, Don entered Texas A & M University to pursue a degree in geophysics.  His college courses were interrupted when he returned to active duty as a First Lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps 1951–1953. When he graduated from Texas A & M in 1954 with a B.S. in geology/geophysics, he began his career with Mobil Oil Company in which he worked as a professional geophysicist. In addition to this, he fulfilled many other responsibilities for Mobil including engineering, management, training, computer design and programming, environmental projects, and he held several patents. He enjoyed his job and always strived to find a better way to do it. Don served on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Board of Trustees for 31 years from 1964-1995, serving as its president for 23 of those years.  He wanted to provide the highest quality of education so that every student could achieve the greatest level of success possible. He was instrumental in developing a long range plan for implementing technology in public schools. That plan has become a reality in the classroom of today. His heart was for the students, but it was also for the teachers.  Don loved teachers!  One of his favorite times was the Convocation at beginning of the year when he could hear the excitement of the teachers as they came together to start the new school year. Don taught Sunday School for 50 years, sang in the Live Wire Choir, and served as a deacon in his church, First Baptist Church, Carrollton.  The foundation of Don’s life came from the decision that he made as a young boy to accept Jesus as his Savior.  It was the source of his strength and the motivation for his service to his family, his church, his community, and his country. He left to us a legacy of faithfulness and integrity. Family will receive friends on Monday, June 5, 2017 from 6–8 p.m. in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 6, 2017  at First Baptist Church Carrollton, 2400 N. Josey Lane, Carrollton, Texas 75006. Following the service there will be a procession to Hilltop Memorial Park Cemetery, 1810 N. Perry Road, Carrollton, Texas 75006. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Carrollton. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

Don was one of the finest, most Godly mean I have ever known. It was my privilege to serve with him on the CFBISD so I got to see his integrity and Christian values expressed in a way that helped so many young people. My love to his family. He will be greatly missed.
