Obituary of Howard, James Carter

James Carter Howard, age 62, died on September 11, 2017, in Dallas, Texas. He had survived (and thrived) with carcinoid cancer for the past 18 years.  James was born on June 12, 1955, in San Angelo, Texas, to Hoyt Dickey (H.D.) and Dorothy Carter Howard.  He graduated from Central High School in San Angelo.  He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Angelo State University and a Master’s degree in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. After college, James began his career at ARCO Oil & Gas in Dallas in 1978. He later worked in accounting and finance in the telecommunications industry for MCI/WorldCom/Verizon.  He retired in 2014. James met Marcia Currie while working at ARCO. They were married in 1990 and enjoyed their 27+ years of married life together.  James was a kind and loving husband.  James was passionate about college football and, oddly enough, became a Texas A&M fan despite his UT education.  He deeply loved each of his German Shepherd dogs and took them for countless walks and car rides.   He was a book lover and enjoyed adding to his collection regularly. James invested in people wherever he went. His friendships dating from elementary school through college were important to him throughout his life.  In the workplace, James made lasting friendships with co-workers.  He cherished relationships with fellow members of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church and enjoyed serving as a greeter on Sunday mornings.  He dearly loved his neighbors and considered his neighborhood a sacred space.  James, along with his dog, was a common sight in the neighborhood as he traversed the streets, talked with friends and watched out for neighbors.  His presence created a sense of community among residents.  He will be missed by so many. James is survived by his wife, Marcia Howard; sister, Susan (Gregory) Denzer; two nephews: Jordan (Christine) Denzer of Richardson, TX, and Blake (Rachelle) Denzer of The Colony, TX; and one grand-nephew, Jack. James leaves behind sister-in-law, Kathleen Johnson; brother-in-law, Randall Currie; nephew Scott (Leia) Johnson and family; and niece Katie Johnson.  He is also survived by beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. A service in celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 9800 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75230;  Faith & Grief Ministries, Inc., www.faithandgrief.org; or SPCA of Texas, spca.org. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

James was such a wonderful, caring man. It’s hard to imagine not seeing him doing the VIP patrol with his trusty companion in the back seat. His smile was contagious and he always had such a positive outlook, even as it was evident his health was declining. I will miss our talks. He was the true definition of a neighbor & friend. I”m very sorry for your loss and will miss him dearly.

Sadly, I had not seen James in a long time.
James and I were born on the same day and in the same hospital in San Angelo. For some reason(I haven’t located the picture yet) we were a feature article I believe on the front page of the local newspaper. Maybe Susan might know why.
We grew up together in elementary, junior high and college.
Although we ran in different circles, once James and I crossed paths, we were happy and the sports talk show was on.
Seeing James picture and his smile reminded me of him being a kind and gentle soul. To me he was a really cool guy.
May the family seek God’s will for peace and serenity through this time.

Regretfully, I had not seen James for a long time. I knew James from day one of our lives. We were born in the same hospital on the same day in San Angelo. I believe we(along with some other mothers and their babies) made the front page of the local newspaper. We went to elementary, junior high and college together. I remember we seemed so happy to see each other when our paths crossed. Our conversations definitely always turn into sports talk.
The obituary picture and that smile reminded me of how caring and kind James always was. James to me was just a really cool guy to be around.
    Rest In Peace my friend.

  21. Art Hughes says:

Marcia, I am so sorry. I always loved conversations with James! I do recall that he once owned a Pontiac Fiero sports car that was somewhat less than reliable, and that he, Steve Phillips, and I LOVED the jalapeno chicken fried steak sandwiches from a sweaty, hole-in-the wall restaurant in eastern downtown Dallas, long since converted to some sort of Yuppie gourmet place.

More importantly, he was a true believer in American Conservatism, and in the mid 1980’s he got me subscribed to Imprimus, the free semi-monthly newsletter of current Conservative essays published by Hillsdale College in Michigan. Then too, he got me subscribed to Accuracy In Media (AIM), the Conservative media watchdog! I pray that you have the strength to carry your grief in this time of sorrow.

Marcia- our prayers are with you at this time. James was a lovely man and we will always remember our chats with him out and driving around with Cara. He was a fixture on our walks and we always looked forward to seeing he and his copilot round the bend to stop and talk. I'm sorry for your loss and he will definitely be missed. He was the true meaning of community, friendship and neighborhood.

  22. Marcia: I was so sorry to read of James’s death via PHPC’s notice of the service for next. What a shock and way to soon. I remember both of you fondly. You are in my prayers during this difficult time.
