Obituary of
Dunmire, Roy Charles
Roy Charles Dunmire, age 89, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018 of cancer.Ā He was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on December 30, 1928.Ā He attended Prosperity Grade School, Buhler High School, and graduated from Hutchinson High School.Ā He joined the Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout. Roy joined the Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, serving in combat during the Korean War.Ā He was with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Regiment, D Company, 2nd Battalion, and participated in battles at Pusan, the Inchol Landing, and at the Chosin Reservoir.Ā The battle at the Chosin Reservoir is now regarded as one of the epic battles in Marine Corps history.Ā Roy was awarded the Bronze Star with combat "V", along with the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Following the Korean War, he attended Kansas State University and fulfilled a dream of becoming a private pilot.Ā He began a career in insurance adjusting, which he continued until retirement.Ā He served as a Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts troop he previously attended, and also served on the Buhler ISD School Board. Roy married Mildred Marie Gittlein of Stafford, Kansas and they had two children; son, Robert Roy Dunmire and daughter, Ann Margaret Dunmire West.Ā Mildred passed away in 2001, and Ann, known as "Margie", passed away suddenly in February 2018. He is survived by his son, Robert, daughter-in-law, Amy Smolik, and son-in-law, Mark West. He was a kind, loving husband and father, and will be missed by all who knew him. Graveside services are set for Monday, August 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at Old Mission Wichita Park Cemetery, 3424 East 21st Street North, Wichita, Kansas 67220.
