Obituary of Eifert, Robert John "Jack"

Robert John Eifert “Jack” of Farmers Branch, Texas passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the age of 87.  He was born on June 24, 1931 to Roman Eifert and Edna Hebbeler Eifert in Covington, KY.  Jack was a graduate of St. Xavier High School and Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH.  Upon graduation in 1953, he served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army.  His assignment to Ft. Hood brought him to the State of Texas.  After completing his service, he served as an Army reservist until 1961. Jack joined the teaching staff of then Jesuit High School in the spring of 1956, beginning nearly 60 years of service to the organization he so loved.  Jack taught history, social studies and economics.  He joined the coaching staff in 1958 as a freshman football coach.  Despite not being much of an athlete himself, he served at various times as freshman football, basketball and baseball coach, assistant varsity football coach, tennis coach and business manager for the athletic department.  In addition to his coaching duties, he also served as moderator of the bowling league, driver education instructor and assistant to the assistant principal. A lifelong reader and believer in the importance of education, Jack obtained a Masters of Liberal Arts from Southern Methodist University in 1971.  In his 58 years of service to Jesuit, he held a number of positions.  After years of teaching and coaching, Jack became Superintendant of Buildings and Grounds in 1974.  Still wanting to be involved with athletics, he served as the PA announcer for all Jesuit track meets and home varsity football games until 1995.  Not satisfied with coaching boys at Jesuit, he coached his daughters’ softball team in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch softball league from 1976 – 1981. Ever the student, Jack learned about computers to assist in the newly developed computer program in 1985, eventually teaching computer applications.  His job took another turn when, in 2005, he assumed the responsibility of converting years of VHS tapes in the school’s historic archives to DVD, substitute teaching and maintaining the school’s laser printers.  Jack retired from Jesuit College Preparatory in 2014, two years shy of 60 years of service. During his service to Jesuit, he received numerous awards and accolades.  He was a 2001 inductee to the Jesuit Sports Hall of Fame.  He received the Hal F. Tehan Award for Excellence in Education in 1995.  In 2006, Jack received the Work of Heart Award from the Catholic Foundation, an honorary diploma from Jesuit College Preparatory School and a 50-year service award – all in recognition of his many years of dedication to Jesuit.  In 2014, in recognition for his service to the school he so loved, the press box was officially named the Jack Eifert Press Box.  He often said one of the things he most enjoyed about teaching was seeing alumni come back to the school to let him know that he was an integral part of their success as an adult. Even though he was devoted to Jesuit, Jack was a man dedicated to his faith and family.  In 1959, he met the stunningly beautiful Adulia “Judy” Benavidez Lopez Perez at the Hart Bowling Alley in Dallas.  Struck by his handsome good looks and college ring, Jack and Judy hit it off.  They were married on June 3, 1960.  Daughters Linda, Mikki and Sandy followed shortly.  They made their home in Farmers Branch where the family attended Mary Immaculate Catholic Church and the girls attended school.  Jack was a member of the Parish Pastoral Council for four years and devoted one year to the Parish Development program.  He served 30 years as an usher and was head of the Ushers/Hospitality Ministry for 15 years.  Jack also served as the coordinator for the Parent Alumni Recruiting Team for Xavier University in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. John Commandery 94. Jack was extremely proud of his daughters.  All college graduates, they funded their education through hard work and determination, qualities their father instilled upon them.  Ever the educator, he allowed them to learn from their mistakes rather than make decisions for them.  Needless to say, they have learned to be strong, independent women. Jack leaves behind his beloved wife Judy of 57 years,  daughters Linda Lee and partner Charlie Jilek, Mikki Eifert and fiancé Lonnie Radford, and Sandy Mayer, husband Matt Mayer and granddaughter Lena Mayer.  He is also survived by his brother Jim Eifert and wife Mary Ann of Erlanger, KY, sister Mary Ann Blair also of Erlanger, KY and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Terry Center on the campus of Jesuit College Preparatory on Thursday, February 14th at 7:00 PM.  The funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Phil Postell on Friday, February 15th at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church at 11:00 AM.  A reception will follow the Mass at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 2280 Spring Lake Rd., Farmers Branch.  A private inurnment at the columbarium at Mary Immaculate will occur at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jesuit College Preparatory scholarship fund at https://www.jesuitdallas.org/giving/memorial-gifts. Jack truly exemplified the Jesuit motto “Men for others”. Robert John Eifert of Farmers Branch, Texas passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the age of 87. I know Jack has been gone awhile now, but when I was a student at Jesuit in the early 1970’s, I really liked the man. He was a good teacher, and I really had some good chats with him…..rest in peace, my friend.

When I merely just think of Cactus Jack, Mr. Eiffort, I am looking at him facing me, blue eyes wide in broad smaile, almost agrin, and the eyes twinkling as if he knows something perhaps I don’t, or maybe he is truly just Happy to be there!White shirt, collar and tie ( an old narrow tie, almost 1950ish, he is a little hunched or leaning forward. Something in his right hand, a clip board or small stack of papers. I cannot hear him, but recall Never to have heard a harsh or loud word. Rest in Peace Jack, I know you still have that smile.

Jack, it takes a remarkable man to raise remarkable children. Mikki is amazing, so I can only assume that you were as well. Love and prayers to the family, and joy for a life well-lived.

Mr. Cactus Jack Eifert! My student “boss” – a mentor – a friend. The only football announcer to pronounce “Songy” correctly. Rock solid example of unconditional love and never without a smile. Thank you for passing that on. And Eifert ladies, all our love and prayers.

On behalf of the Bordelon family, please accept our most sincere condolences for your loss. Most especially I say this to my classmate Sandy. You were doubly blessed to know your dad as a child and as an adult. My mom and dad were there to welcome him, I believe. I pray that the time you grieve will be short and that as scripture says your mourning will turn to joy as you remember all the good memories that his example provided.
