Obituary of Grant, Alvis Beasley

Alvis Grant, 95, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019.  He was born in Gary, Texas, Panola County on September 24th, 1923 to Benjamin Franklin Grant and Gertie Sue Grant. He came from humble beginnings and was one of the original nine boys in Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch.  Alvis served in the Marines in WWII as an ambulance driver in the Pacific Theater and served in four invasions: Roi-Namor, Marshall Islands; Saipan; Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the bronze star Combat V for Iwo Jima and the Presidential Unit Citation for Saipan and Iwo Jima. Alvis had three passions in his life…his wife, Maurice and his two children, Barbara and Steve; handball and his portrait painting. He met the love of his life on the day he returned from WWII on December 3rd, 1945 and they married on January 29, 1946. They were married for 40 years and he always said they had a “sweetheart” marriage. He learned the trade of sign painting and became the most respected sign painter in Dallas.  When he retired at age 72, he devoted his life to painting portraits. He painted 54 Congressional Medal of Honor winners, which are in museums around the country. Alvis played handball competitively for 70 years. He donated 98 paintings to the U.S. Handball Association, which are still on display in Tucson, Arizona. He won 123 tournaments in his handball career and also was inducted in the Handball Hall of Fame as a contributor. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Schumann (Bob); his sister, Ann Rowe (Don); his 2 grandchildren, Kristina McLinden (Alex) and Kyle Schumann (Dorathy); great grandson Apollo McLinden; and his nieces and nephews. Alvis is preceded in death by his wife, Maurice and his son, Stephen. The family will be receiving friends for visitation and viewing on Thursday, June 27, 2019 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.
