Obituary of Glinka, Marjorie Lou (Shaw)

Marjorie Lou (Shaw) Glinka, Age 84 of The Colony, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2019 at Jennifer’s Angels Assisted Living in Plano, Texas, after a five-year journey with dementia. Marge was born September 13, 1935, delivered at home on a farm in Lapeer, Michigan.  Her parents divorced when she was young, so she spent a lot of time in her early years with her Aunty Esther and Uncle Lawrence and her paternal grandparents.  In her teens she moved to Miami, Florida to live with her mother and stepfather.  She graduated from Miami Edison High School in 1953.  She married her first husband Robert Drovedahl in 1952.  Bob, a young marine, became her pen pal when she and her high school friend started writing to servicemen published in a magazine.  During their marriage they traveled back and forth multiple times from North Carolina, to California while Bob was completing his training.  They also lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; they were stationed in the Philippines for 18 months, traveling to and from by ship; and Quantico, Virginia.  Marge met her second husband, Bernard Glinka, also a career marine, in 1966 in Jacksonville, NC.  They married in 1967.  She and Ben lived in Alexandria, Virginia; Detroit, Michigan (while Ben was overseas in Vietnam); San Diego, California and Overland Park, Kansas while he was stationed at the Marine Corp Finance Center in Kansas City, Missouri.  She became a transplanted Texan in 1981, moving as a single parent of two young boys to provide a new start.  They lived in North Dallas, Carrollton and finally settled in The Colony until her journey with dementia began in 2014. Marge worked as a secretary, as a teller at a bank in the Pentagon and finally found her niche in the insurance industry.  She spent her 40-year insurance career working for several companies as an insurance adjuster, insurance claims representative and customer service representative, until her retirement from MetLife in 2014.  She had a bubbling personality and a wonderful smile, known as “Momma Marge” or “Granny Marge” to her co-workers.  She loved quilting and adding to her collections.  She loved her children dearly and adored her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille (Lucy) Fox and Charles Shaw.  She leaves behind her children, Karen (Richard) Green, Steve Glinka and Sean (Jenny) Glinka and grandchildren Erik Green, Jared Green and Charles Glinka along with a legacy of friends whose lives she touched. Family will be receiving visitors on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church 2800 Valwood Pkwy, Farmers Branch, TX 75234. Rosary will begin at 12:30 pm with a Funeral Mass at 1:00 pm. Cremation to follow with inurnment at Mary Immaculate Church Columbarium. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
