Obituary of Sellers, Mary Alice (Harper)

Mary Alice (Harper) Sellers of Dallas, TX passed away peacefully the morning of her 90th birthday, October 31, 2019, surrounded by her three children.  She was born October 31, 1929 in Kansas City, MO to George O. and Daisy F. (Baker) Harper.  She spent her elementary years in Sandusky, OH.  The family returned to Independence, MO in 1943 and Mary Alice graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City in 1947. Mary Alice married Robert Kelley “Bob” Sellers November 25, 1949.  She worked for Southwestern Bell as a customer service representative until the young couple bought a farm five miles west of Adrian, MO in 1951. Mary Alice and Bob raised cattle on the farm nearly fifty years and had three children along the way.  She was an active member of the Adrian Christian Church, singing tenor in the Church choir and small gospel and barbershop groups.  She was involved in her community as a clarinet player of the Bates County Nostalgia Band and loved other artistic pursuits including painting, sewing, quilting and smocking.  Mary Alice enjoyed a professional career as a certified graphoanalyst, writing a regular column for local newspapers and participating in the Leavenworth Penitentiary project.  She also served as a librarian at the Bates County Library, worked as an election judge and census taker.  After Bob preceded her in death on March 1, 2000, Mary Alice continued to run the farm until she decided to move to Dallas, TX in November 2005.  She became an active member of the Wilshire Baptist Church, joining Charlie’s Angels Sunday School class, singing in the New Song choir and playing clarinet with the Wilshire Winds and joining a quilting group. Mary Alice is survived by her three children: Kathleen “Kathy” Kelley Sellers Jacobs (widow of Richard L. Jacobs) of Garland, TX, Robert Kent Sellers and wife Angela of Kansas City, MO and Georgia Kay Sellers and husband Brittain Clure of Dallas.  She will be greatly missed by her five grandchildren:  Laura Sellers and husband James Moore of Nashville, TN, Emily Sellers and fiancé Kyle MacNair of Kansas City, MO, Mark Sellers of St. Louis, MO, Caroline Clure and Camden Clure of Dallas.  She is also survived by her brother Mike Harper and wife Alice of Greenwood, MO and three nephews, Jason Harper, Curtis Harper and Ralph Berry. Memorial Service will be on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 1:00 pm at McIver Chapel, Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Road, Dallas, Texas 75214 Inurnment of ashes at the Crescent Hill Cemetery near Adrian, MO at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to one of the following: New Song & Wilshire Winds at Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Road, Dallas, Texas 75214 or Adrian Christian Church, P.O. Box 66, Adrian, MO  64720. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
