Obituary of Dobbie, Rev. Bette June Thompson

Rev. Bette June Thompson Dobbie, 96, passed away peacefully on Easter morning, Sunday, April 12, 2020, at her home at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas. Bette was born on June 1, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. Her parents were Otto Victor and Sedwell Susan Liddicoat Thompson. She graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in 1941. She married Herbert Reuben Dobbie two years later and they raised 5 children in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. After 35 years of marriage, Bette embarked on a new path which included the study of Archaeology and Biblical Studies at Wheaton College, graduating in 1980. Bette then followed a call to Christian ministry by enrolling at the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago where she was awarded a Master of Divinity in 1984. Bette served as pastor in Presbyterian and Methodist churches in Three Rivers, Lyons and Muir, Michigan as well as in Palm Harbor, Florida, where she moved after her “retirement.” While living in Florida, Bette married Howard Pierce in 1991; Howard passed away 2 years later. Bette devoted her considerable energy to a variety of pursuits. She enjoyed many wonderful summers with family and friends at their cottage in northern Michigan. As a student at Wheaton, she participated in archaeological digs in Israel. She served a year with a mission group in Costa Rica. In later years, she traveled with religious groups to Russia, Israel and various European countries. In 2001 Bette moved to Dallas to be near family. She became a well-known and valued member of the PVN community, devoting countless hours ministering to residents of the health care unit, brightening their days with her jokes, reassuring words and candy treats. Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church became her Dallas church home. Bette was blessed with strong faith, a desire to serve, dear friends and a caring family. Bette is predeceased by her parents, her sister Shirley Tolin and her beloved children Tom Dobbie and Lois Lee. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Donna Carson and Ron Kowalski of Philadelphia, son and daughter-in-law Gary and Sally Dobbie of Dallas, son-in-law Harry Lee of McKinney, daughter and son-in-law Judy and Jim Bradtke of Kalamazoo, MI, grandchildren Lee (Jackie) and Mark (Jennifer) Carrasco, Jeremy (Julie), Justin (Mary Chris) and Eric (Kate) Dobbie, Diane Price, Matt Lee, Megan (Doug) Waldron, Suzanne (Kevin) Karnes, James Bradtke and 18 great-grandchildren. A service to remember and celebrate Bette’s life will be held when larger gatherings are recommended. Donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Association DFW, 1600 Viceroy Dr, Ste 400, Dallas 75235, Salvation Army DFW, PO Box 36006, Dallas 75235, or charity of your choice. And for that matter, I’ll always remember her taking me to see “Mrs. Pollifax, Spy” at the Elk Rapids Cinema when I was about 8 years old. 🙂

I just ran across this. Bette was one of my mother Phyllis’s good friends. I have very good memories of her and my mom laughing it up together. I hadn’t seen her for some 20 or more years now. I wish all the best to her family.
