Obituary of
Thompson Jr., Ira "Deedie"
Ira “Deedie” Thompson Jr. was born on March 8, 1937, in Abilene, TX and passed from this life on August 21, 2020 in Carrollton, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Deedie and Natalie McClure Thompson, of Seagoville, TX, and his son, Dennis Keith Thompson of Carrollton, TX. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Glenda Smith Thompson; daughter, Mitzi Gayle Thompson; granddaughter, Amy Thompson Baker and her husband Tim Baker of Cottage Grove, OR; grandson, Jason Keith Thompson and wife Melody Thompson of Wauchula, FL; daughter-in-law, Annette Thompson Coffey and husband David Coffey of Carrollton, TX; and 5 great grandchildren, Gabe and Jordan Baker, Levi, Jonathan and Solomon Thompson; two brothers, Bill Thompson and wife Bunny of Atlanta, GA, and Bob Thompson of Corvallis, OR., and sister-in-law Sharon Smith Wells and husband Ray of Jasper, TX, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends of all ages.
Deedie attended Seagoville High School, Texas A & M University, and North Texas University where he received his master’s degree and Administrative Certificate. He taught English and coached football and basketball at Vivian Field Middle School, and coached at Coppell High School, as well as being an Elementary Principal. He was a teacher, coach, and principal for 33 years.
Deedie was an outstanding place kicker for the Seagoville Dragons football team in the 1950’s. The Dallas Morning news nicknamed him “The Toe” and that name stuck with him throughout his life. Friends that knew him in high school called him Toe throughout his life.
Deedie’s passion was for his family, and he was a loving husband, involved father and grandfather. He was loved for his smile and hospitality, and the unselfish way he cared for everyone around him. He loved middle school age kids and if he could have raised his family on a teacher’ salary, he would have spent his entire school career teaching Middle School children.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

I will always remember his kindness when my mother passed.
We worked together at Lee Elementary in Coppell ISD and I was an unseasoned, new Elementary librarian. We named our library turtle after him and was known to the students as Mr T.
So many good memories.

I won’t repeat what Bob has already shared. As is sometimes the custom in the South, people are referred to by their “role” in the family, not their actual name. I have a friend who still refers to her “Aunt Sister.” No one knows her real name. It was somewhat the same in our family. Deedie was called “Brother” in our early years. Bob and I couldn’t say brother so we called him “Bubba.”
Deedie loved to play practical jokes. On one occasion, when we were on a field trip on a train, the train stopped, seemingly in the middle of nowhere.
Deedie had me convinced that the train had a flat tire, even though I knew trains didn’t run on tires.
He was always a jolly old soul.
Blessings to all his surviving family.

Deedie &Glenda have been our close friends for over 40 years. We were introduced to them by Dennis and Mitzi (teenagers at the time) and felt as if we immediately became a part of their family. Although we moved from Texas years ago we remained close, taking trips together, sharing anniversaries, birthdays, weddings of our children, funerals, always picking up as if we were still a few miles apart. Deedie was the same kind, compassionate, fun-loving man from the first day we met to the last time we were able to be together. We will miss Deedie, but have special memories to cherish until we see him again.

I loved Deedie’s sense of humor. The world is better because of his love of God and the way he lived as a man of Christ. The world is less because he left. I am sorry for your loss here on earth,, Glenda and Mitzi.

Mr. Thompson was such a kind and patient man. I remember his patients when he took Mitzi and Janet and I water skiing on the lake. He must’ve had to do 10 passes to be able to get me up on those skis! But he did it all with a smile and a story or two. Mitzi our prayers are with you and your mom and your whole family. Praise God for a life well lived!

Mr. Thompson was my first principal. Many memories come to mind; but one I will share concerns his love an care of the students. One year I had a Kindergarten students who always wanted to eat breakfast. She ate at home; but once she got to school she wanted to eat again. Because she had eaten at home her parents did not send extra money. Mr. Thompson bought her breakfast every morning that she wanted to eat. I did not find that our until some time later. He did not need the praises of his peers; just the satisfaction that he made a litle girl’s day by giving her extra attention. May his family be comforted knowing that others know of his loving and compassionate heart.

There is no other way to describe DD than to jusr say what a wonderful person he was. My heartfelt condolences go out Glenda and all of his family. DD was a great high school field goal kicker. He was quiet often referred to as “the toe”. He got this nickname after Lou “the toe” Groza – a great NFL kicker.

Bill and I are twin brothers, 3 years younger that Deedie. Deedie was a model older brother and put up with a lot of “stuff” from his twin siblings. Bill and I did not learn English until we entered school. As sometimes happens, twins that spend a lot of time alone together at a very early age may develop their own language. In fact, linguists have studied this phenomenon by way of learning how languages started and evolved.
MY POINT? When our parents could not understand what we (the twins) were saying, Deedie interpreted for us. Maybe that, too, could be a study for linguists and sociologists. He was a great man. My prayers are with Glenda and all of his relatives.

My Uncle Deedie was a high school football star, but was so much more in the decades that followed. My Uncle and Aunt were married 63 years before he passed away this past week. During most of those years he worked as an educator. I have my own special memories of his laugh (that gravelly, explosive gufaw), his passion for game-playing (pinacle and Wahoo, etc), and his love for his family (AND his dogs!). Stories are pouring in about the lives that were touched by his generosity and care. I have so much to learn from the life he lived so well. The key is in applying those lessons now to be a life that makes that extra point for someone else.
