Obituary of
Bass, Marvin "Sam"
Marvin “Sam” Bass was born January 1928, in Vernon, Texas, to Hubert and Mary Bass. He has one brother, Joe, and a sister, Mary Evelyn. When Sam was 9-years-old, his family moved to Roanoke, Texas, where they had a farm. He graduated from Roanoke High School in 1945.
At 20-years-old, he began his service in the United States Army. After basic training, he deployed to Korea where he was sent to the front lines. During his year in Korea, he survived many attacks, the hemorrhagic fever, and time as a Prisoner of War.
Sam was honorably discharged and returned home to Texas. He attended North Texas State University, then went to work at General Motors in Arlington, Texas, until he retired in 1989. Never a stranger to hard work, he also had a general contractor business that kept him busy on his time off.
He married Rhoena Sangster in 1973, and gained two children that he loved as his own.
Sam was involved in the Korean War Veteran’s Association Chapter 215 in Arlington, Texas. Each July, he would decorate his truck and trailer and proudly drive veterans in the Arlington 4th of July Parade. Sam loved to get in the car and travel, whether it was on an errand across town or across the country on a long road trip. He was always on the go. He loved to garden and was proud of his beautiful, green grass. He always had a project going on around the house. Sam rarely missed a Dallas Cowboys game, and loved watching the Texas Rangers and the Texas Longhorns. He was a people person and enjoyed cutting up and laughing.
Sam fought many battles over his 92 years, but COVID was one that he could not defeat. He passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rhoena of Dallas, Texas; his brother, Joe Bass of Ardmore, Oklahoma; his daughter Debbi Keithley of Dallas, Texas; his son Kennie Sangster of Carrollton, Texas; his granddaughter Shannon Glass and her husband, Ronald, of Carrollton, Texas; his granddaughter Stephanie Lollar and her husband, Dustin, of The Woodlands, Texas; his grandson Tony Keithley and his wife, Lora, of Kansas City, Kansas; and his 10 great-grandchildren: Peyton Glass, Luke Glass, Reese Glass, Jacob Glass, Audrey Lollar, Ava Lollar, Allie Lollar, Cole Burton, Tucker Keithley, and Lane Keithley.
Visitation will be at North Dallas Funeral Home in Farmers Branch, Texas, on Monday, August 31, 2020, at 10:00 am in the Brooks Family Chapel. The service will follow at 11:00 am. The service will also be available to view online. He will be buried at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. (Due to COVID restrictions, only the immediate family will attend the graveside service.)

It was a joy to have Sam as a neighbor for many years. He was friendly, helpful, patriotic and kept one of the neatest yards on Northmoor. We all missed him when he moved to nursing care. Loving memories of this congenial man.

I will never forget Sam, nor his smile or kindest of hearts. I grew up next door to Sam. His was always the hard working spirit and he always asked about everyone in my family. The best of him will live on in Ro, his family and all those he touched. Grateful for the blessing of knowing him and the time we had together.

I thank the Good Lord for allowing my path to intersect w my friends Sam & Ro Bass. I have personally witnessed Ro visiting her beloved husband Sam daily for the last 3 yrs. This loving couple has been a pure blessing to me as I visited my husband. We have enjoyed big smiles, lots of laughter & a love only close friends share.
I can truly attest to Sam being a “people person” as he always flashed that beautiful smile every time I saw him. Rest in power my friend, I will always remember your effervescent smile.

I have fond memories of Uncle Sam. Spending a lot of time on his patio and just in general talking and laughing. He was one of those fun angles and will be sorely missed.
