Obituary of Degard, George Arthur

George Arthur Degard passed away peacefully on December 30, 2020, at the age of 77. “Chief”, to those who knew him, was full of wisdom, humor, and merciless wit.  He was born December 15, 1943, in Miami, Florida, to Charles Sr. and Elsie (Knoebel) Degard. He graduated from Hialeah High School in 1962, obtained an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Administration from the Community College of the Air Force, and was a graduate of the Tactical Air Command Noncommissioned Officers Academy and the Senior Noncommissioned Officers Academy.  He began his long and distinguished military career in June 1962 and was stationed in Florida, California, Arizona, South Vietnam, Libya, the Philippines, and Thailand, where he met his wife.  He married Pamlak in November 1971 and moved to Arizona.  In May 1978, Chief Degard was selected for special duty with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) where he served as the Administrative Superintendent to the Deputy Chief of Staff Operations and Intelligence and as Noncommissioned Officer-in Charge and Administrative Superintendent to the Assistant Chief of Staff, Logistics Division, Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT) at Brunssum City, The Netherlands.  In October 1982, he came to Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, as Superintendent, Base Administration, and resided in Benbrook with his wife and only child, Amanda.  During his military lifetime, he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Metal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal twice.  In 1992, Chief Degard retired after 30 years of remarkable service.  Soon after, he began his career as a detention officer for the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office and retired after 17 years.  Over the last several years, he worked as a federal security officer for inpatient inmates at various county hospitals. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Pamlak of Benbrook, TX; daughter, Amanda Donihoo and her husband Scott Donihoo of Sachse, TX; grandson, Pierce Donihoo; sister, Carol Schulze and her husband Paul Schulze of Ocala, FL; brother-in-law Prasit Ruenvouth of Benbrook; beloved cat, Floyd; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.  He was preceded in death by his older brother Charles Degard, Jr., and his beloved canine companion, Penny. He touched many hearts and always thrived to help anyone.  He loved sports, financial planning, spending time with his family, catching up with friends, and keeping up with the latest technology.  Chief led a full and remarkable life and was valiant to the end.  He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, worker, and a great friend to many and will be incredibly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at DFW National Cemetery located at 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas TX 75211 on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 10:00 am.
