Obituary of Payne, Jack Creighton

Jack Creighton Payne of Dallas, Texas passed away on January 13, 2021, to go and be with his Lord. He is survived by his loving family, his wife Charlotte Martin Payne, daughters Mariah Hird and Missie Gooding, sons in law John Hird and Douglas Gooding, step children Lee and Blair (Anne) Oden and Caroline (Robert) Wylie, along with 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mary Hoehn Payne of Waco, Texas and his granddaughter, Katherine Payne Gooding of Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Payne was born in San Antonio, Texas to parents Myrtle and Jack Payne in 1928, and raised by Irene and Arthur Gilliland (“Nanny and Papa”), whom he adored. Following graduation from the University of Texas at Austin (where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity), he served in the US Navy and then began a successful and distinguished career in the investment industry. He held leadership positions in many firms over four decades, including Dallas Union Securities, Norman, Payne and Schwinger ( Co-founder), Lehman Brothers and Rauscher Pierce Refsnes. For much of his career he specialized in the municipal fixed income market and proudly served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Municipal Advisory Council of Texas, which continues to play a major role in municipal underwriting today.  He also served in a variety of positions for the National Association of Securities Dealers.  He thoroughly enjoyed his years in the investment industry and loved his many friends with whom he worked. Jack greatly adored his wife Charlotte, and treasured their many years together, particularly when traveling.  While he was always ambitious, he never dreamed of seeing the corners of the world that they explored and the friends they made on countless excursions. Trips to all parts of Europe, all regions of this continent, and especially their summers in Maine filled his heart with memories. His love of their extended family was evident, particularly in the eyes of his grandkids, whether they were Goodings, Odens or Wylies. He took great joy in their accomplishments and was always extremely proud of each of them.  They will forever remember his hugs, silly songs, stories and endless country quips ( "Good God Mrs. Fleming!", "Jump back Loretta!" and "God Almighty Myrtle!", to name a few). He was well-read and his interests were broad, with a focus on history.  A former Sunday School teacher and Children’s Hospital volunteer, he was passionate about serving children.  Jack loved following the investment markets closely (particularly oil and gas), reading and constantly learning on an endless range of topics and cheering on his Dallas Cowboys. His years fishing in Wimberley and at the Ferndale Club in East Texas were among his happiest. His most dominant interests were his many friends. He collected them through years of work, travel and just life, whether in Houston, Dallas, the Hill Country, the Highland Park Community and most recently the Tradition. Finally, he loved and was loved meaningfully by his daughters and they will miss him very much. His remains will be interred at St Michael & All Angels Episcopal in Dallas.
