Obituary of
Mathews Jr., John Marshall
John Marshall Mathews Jr. of Carrollton, Texas passed away from complications of COVID-19 on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the age of 73.
John was born on December 19, 1947 to Fay and John Mathews Sr. in Dallas, Texas. John graduated from North Dallas High School in 1966. He went on to pursue a degree in education from North Texas State, where he was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Upon graduation John began his teaching and coaching career with the Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD serving at both R.L. Turner High School and DeWitt Perry Middle School. John’s motivation to impact each and every student in the schools that he served lead him to earn his Master’s degree in Administration in 1991 from Texas Women’s University. He served as an Assistant Principal at both R.L. Turner and Creekview High Schools. After his time as an administrator John continued serving students and the CFBISD by running for the school board. John was elected to the school board in 2011 and was elected President in 2018. During his 51 years of service to CFBISD, John’s most treasured duty was being the “Voice of Standridge Stadium”. Everyone knew where to find Coach Mathews under the Friday Night Lights or on Saturdays during track season. Outside of school, we can credit “Mr. Mathews” for training a majority of the drivers within the Carrollton Farmers Branch city limits. Driver’s education was always a favorite way to still teach young minds outside of the school setting. Throughout his life, John pursued his passion for the Lord consistently by participating in the choir and holiday performances at First Baptist Church of Carrollton.
John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Dina. Daughter Amy Sexton and her husband Marty of Leander, TX. Daughter, Julie Hovey and her husband Dave of Dallas. Son, Todd Frank and wife Abby of Parker, TX. Son, Rhett Mathews of Keller. Grandchildren, Kristen and Megan Kelly, Connor, Payton and Ashton Jane Frank, Davis and Travis Maddox, Reagan Hovey and Wyatt Mathews.
Services will be held Saturday, May 1st at the First Baptist Church at the Fields in Carrollton, Texas. An optional viewing will begin at 12:00 pm with the funeral service immediately following at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Mazie’s Mission Rescue Clinic, 2501 E. Hebron Parkway, Suite 200, Carrollton, Texas 75010.
Please leave the family condolences and/or share memories.
