Obituary of King III, Carey Gray

Carey Gray King III of Dallas, Texas passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at the age of 76. Carey was on Texas soil to Judith Winans and Carey Gray Jr in Philadelphia where his father was stationed prior to deployment in World War II.  The family returned to its Texas roots after the war.  Carey graduated from Highland Park High School and Washington and Lee University.  He completed Naval OCS in 1967 and proudly served two tours of duty on the USS Intrepid.  He earned his MBA in Finance from the UT Austin in 1970, then worked for the SEC in Washington, D.C. before joining the E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, DE.  Carey married Kathleen Roark and is the proud father of three sons.  Carey moved to Arkansas to work with Entergy in 1997 and then to Dallas, working first for Edward Jones then as an independent financial adviser affiliated with LPL Financial.  His passion was educating his clients about planning and helping them achieve their financial goals.  Once back in Texas, Carey vowed never to leave without a return ticket in hand.  He and wife Mary wed in 1999 and shared a love for family and friends.  Carey was an avid hunter and enjoyed traveling country roads to experience sunrises and sunsets in the field or a deer blind as well as bonding time around the campfire.  He was a master of the grill and created memorable meals from the game he hunted.  Carey loved to travel, and their blended family provided the opportunity for many great trips.  Carey, aka PopPop, took great delight in his grandchildren and loved nothing more than sharing adventures with them. Carey’s brother Stuart King and sister-in-law Nell King preceded him in death.  He is survived by his wife, Mary Coleman King; sons Patrick King (Michele Levine), Regan King (Elizabeth), and Adam King (Kate), step-daughters Sara Whittington (Ryan Long), and Emily Touchstone (David) and grandchildren Avery and Bennett Levine King, Isabel and Clover King, GG and Calvin King, Connell Long, and Leah and Meredith Touchstone.  He is also survived by his sister, Elisabeth Seibold (John), brother Chris King (Cody Brady), niece and nephews Judy King and Stuart King (Michelle), and C. J. Seibold, and extended family Mary and Jack Bankhead, Martha King, Julie Winans, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Camp Grady Spruce (https://campgradyspruce.org/);  www.cowtownwarriors.com; or Metroport Meals On Wheels (www.metroportmow.org) The family invites you to join them in a celebration gathering at 6321 Westchester, Dallas 75205 following the service. Please leave condolences and share memories on this website.

Carey, I’ve often heard fond stories of you throughout the years from my Dad, Bill. He told me of your friendship that started when you were just in your teens, including your scooter adventures on Central Expressway (I know highway much different these days, but still! ). Thank you for being such a great friend to my Dad-I am grateful for you and your family, and my thoughts are with all of you.
