Obituary of Camp, Richard O'Daniel (Danny)

Memorial Service: Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Webb Chapel Church of Christ (13425 Webb Chapel Road Farmers Branch, Texas) Graveside (private) Obituary: Richard O’Daniel (Danny) Camp passed away peacefully at home in Dallas on May 8, 2021 at the age of 85 after his brave, long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.  His incredible strength, along with his ready smile and twinkling eyes, delighted and amazed all of us through out these latter years of his life. Danny was born to Fred and Fanny Camp in Gainesville, Texas on August 10, 1935.  He was foremost a family man, marrying and spending most of his long life with his high school sweetheart, Mary Sue Riley. They celebrated 66 wonderful years of life together on April 1st this year!  He and Sue raised a family of four children, Linda, Brenda, Darren, and Kimberly.  He especially loved being “Papaw Danny” to his six grandchildren (Adam, Keri Jo, Zach, Kelli, Riley, and Danielle) and his ten great-grandchildren (Joss, Trip, Evvy, Juni, Darcy, Reves, Parks, Hayes, Charlie, and Jolene).   He was preceded in death by his sister Jeanette Haggard and his brother Fred Camp, Jr. Danny graduated from Gainesville High School in 1955 and he attended night school at Cooke County Junior College for a decade, except for one year of active duty with the 49th Armored Division at Fort Polk Louisiana.  He continued his education at North Texas State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1971.  Subsequently, he completed his Master’s degree at Southern Methodist University in 1978.   Dan, as he was known professionally, enjoyed a long career in human resources at Republic National Bank, Ft. Worth National Bank, and the Freeman Companies. Danny loved sports.  He played basketball, football, and ran track in high school.  He had many adventures officiating high school football for a decade.  But playing golf was his enduring sports passion, and his favorite story was of being of a marshal at Brookhaven Country Club and getting to know Jordan Spieth, a young high school golfer from Jesuit High School. Dan, along with his wife Sue, were pillars of their church, Webb Chapel Church of Christ, which they first joined in November 1966.  He was a beloved and respected elder and teacher, and he touched and influenced many lives across several generations. Danny will be missed deeply by his family, friends, and church community Please leave the family condolences and/or share memories on this website.

Sue, I am so sorry that I am just finding out about Dan’s passing. My mother loved you two so much, as do I. Dan suggested that I read F. Lagard Smith’s book AFTER LIFE. I would like to believe that Smith was right and that dying is like falling asleep in the operating room: it’s like you quickly drift off and just as quickly wake up- a day from now or thousands of years from now. When he opens his eyes, what he’ll (and we’ll) see is beyond human words.

Dear Mary Sue and family, Life has indeed lost a stellar example of humanity at it’s highest level. Dan was as personable as they come and always made people feel good. Dan and Mary Sue were the perfect compliment to each other….everywhere together with enthusiasm! As long as memories are active, Dan will live in the hearts and minds of all he touched. I certainly am a better man for having known him. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss, Ray.

Our sincere condolences to Mary Sue and the entire family. Danny and I were in the same graduating class of Gainesville High School. I remember when Danny and Mary Sue married but it was a secret for a while because both were still in high school shortly before Danny graduated. Carolyn and I wish sincerely for peace in your bereavement.
