Obituary of McIver, Don Rhoderic

Don Rhoderic McIver, 93, passed away peacefully at home in Frisco, TX on May 8, 2021.  An engaging storyteller with a zest for life, Don was born on March 4, 1928, in Quanah, TX.  He is predeceased by his parents, Zadie Runkles McIver, and Eldon Drue McIver, as well as his beloved first wife of 49 years, Lillian Lowdon Slaughter McIver.  Don and Lillian’s surviving family includes their two children, Jineen McIver Bessire (Mike) and Richard S. McIver (Lynda), granddaughters Sarah Florsheim (Charlie), Ashley Martinez (René), and Caitlin McIver; great-granddaughters Raegan and Lilly Florsheim, Zadie, and Maya Martinez. Don grew up in Hunt, TX, amid the hardships of the Great Depression, the son of an educator and trailblazing single mother.  His entrepreneurial spirit was sparked early in childhood selling earthworms to tourists fishing the Guadalupe River.  He enjoyed swimming in the Guadalupe and Barton Springs as a young man, attending Crider’s rodeo and dancing to the jukebox for a nickel.  His love of automobiles - particularly convertibles - was a constant throughout his life, as were optimism and a ‘can do’ spirit. During his lengthy professional career, Don applied a solid work ethic to endeavors in ranching, oil field supplies, pharmaceutical and automobile sales, restaurant ownership, and licensed business brokerage.  He helped found the Texas Association of Business Brokers in 1979, and the International Business Brokers Association in 1984, serving as its chair in 1990.  Don lived his life committed to leading through positive examples, hard work and service. Remembered as a true gentleman with a hearty laugh and a kind word for everyone, Don never met a stranger.  He took a sincere personal interest in everyone he met, always ready with a story, a joke to break the ice, or a prayer that spoke to the listener’s needs.  A descendant of Methodist circuit riders, Don possessed an unwavering faith in God, leading he and Lillian to become founding members of Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano, TX, where they served in numerous leadership and teaching roles for 20 years. In 2000, Don married beautiful and fun Beverly Loughborough McIver, acquiring a large, loving family of supportive children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren whom he loved as his own.  Don is survived by his beloved Beverly and her children, Tom Loughborough (Venise), Marcia Brooks (Lewis), Marion Glazer (Bennett), Dan Loughborough, Barbara McMullin (Miles), Janet DeBesse (Bob), Bill Loughborough (Sarah), Jack Loughborough, Jim Loughborough (Julie), and their families. Don is also survived by his sister Barbara White, nieces Marsha Sparks (Jon), Natalie Hoelscher (David), Kimberly Goodson (Guy), Alyson Ray (J.T.), and his nephew John White (Paula). Don will be missed by all who knew him, but especially by his family.  A private family service is planned for Memorial Day weekend.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Street Methodist Mission - FUMC Fort Worth; The Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center – Fort Worth; Metropolitan Ministries – Tampa, Florida; or Susan G.  Komen.
