Obituary of Kapischke, Elwood G.

Elwood G. Kapischke, born November 25, 1932, Elwood passed from this life on May 14, 2021. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Janet (nee Mattson) Kapischke, son David (Roxanne and daughter Kaycee) Schmitt, daughter Heide (Steve) Olson and son Kurt (Candice) Kapischke as well as grandchildren Heather, Scott, Christopher and Kyle; in addition to many dear family and friends. Elwood led a rich, adventurous life. A great storyteller, he shared many fun stories of growing up in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and proudly served aboard the USS Bataan – CVL29.  Afterwards, he worked as a Journeyman printer/linotype operator for the Chicago Tribune and the Stars and Stripes Newspaper (Darmstadt, Germany). Loving travel, he and Janet used the Stars and Stripes years to tour Europe. When they returned to the U.S., their next adventure was opening a printshop, Mariner Press, in Lake Villa, Illinois. Then, he worked for several years in the paper industry as a warehouse manager. In his free time he enjoyed golf, fishing and chess. When retirement was on the horizon, they moved to California and he worked as a Security Officer for the Merced Hospital. This job, a favorite, allowed him to use his empathy, compassion, and sense of humor to help those in stress who needed it most. There, he worked with partner and friend, Elena (Ignacio) Rodriguez. His last adventure was moving with Janet to live near son Kurt and family in McKinney, TX. Elwood’s guiding spirit was “always do your best and have fun.” He will be dearly missed. His parents, George and Elsie Kapischke and sister, Gwen (James) Anderson, predecease him. There will be no service, but memorials in his name can be made to honor the precious work of the Silverado Hospice at 4500 Beltway Drive, Addison, TX 75001.
