Obituary of Wimberly, Billy Ray

Billy Ray Wimberly, lovingly known as “Sarg”, age 77, of Dallas TX, left this earth and was welcomed into the arms of His Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ on (Father’s Day) Sunday, June 20th, 2021. There could not have been a more perfectly chosen day for his being called into Heaven as he was an amazing father, grand-father, and father-figure to the many who knew and loved him. A military graveside service and honorable send-off will be held on Friday, July 2nd promptly at 11am at the DFW National Cemetery.  All are welcomed to join us either at the cemetery by 10:50am or as we escort him “Veteran-style” from the North Dallas Funeral Home in Farmers Branch TX to the cemetery leaving promptly at 9:50am.  His favorite pastor, Pastor Crawford, will be providing the blessing. Billy Ray Wimberly was born on Jan 7th, 1944 in Crossett, AR and grew up in Bastrop, LA.  He met his best friend Lena Turner in the first grade, who later became his first and only girlfriend, wife, and love of his life.  He graduated from Morehouse HS in Bastrop, LA in 1962 and joined the US Army, beginning a 23- year career serving his beloved country.  On one of his first assignments while in New York waiting to be deployed to Germany, he proposed to his “sweetie,” as he called her, mailed her a ring, and they were married on December 27th, 1964 and recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.  During his military career, he both traveled to and served in many different countries, fighting for what he most believed in: the right to worship God, love, provide and protect his Family and defend the United States of America.  He received many military active duty high honors and awards including the Marksman and Rifleman Awards and a hard earned journey to the rank of Sergeant First Class.  He and his family moved to and lived on many US military bases, the longest amount of time spent in Fort Stewart, GA, where he and his wife made many life-long friends.  Following honorable retirement from the military, he was transferred to Dallas, TX and worked as an Inspector/Grader for the USDA until his retirement from there as well. He was firm in his faith and in his love for all things family, and this was evident to all who met and knew him.  He and his wife Lena raised two beloved sons and he took great pride and joy in teaching them both about life, love and God.  He was a devout Christian and was a member of Pleasant Mound Methodist Church where he spent the majority of his retirement years volunteering countless hours and working for his church family as an accountant, maintenance man, and poured his heart and soul into the future generation/youth of the church’s “school”. The other great passions in his life were education and golf.  He graduated from St Leo College, was an avid reader and was rarely seen going anywhere without a “book in hand.”  He committed himself to learning a new word everyday and used these words in his everyday speech, and even read books on the etiquette and proper use of the English language.  Studies of these subjects, along with his analytical mind and his love for engaging in intellectual and philosophical discussions, made him a one-of-a-kind conversationalist.  These conversations and lessons he taught, especially when given/received on the golf course, in the garage or by the BBQ grill , were unparalleled and will be remembered and cherished by many. He is preceded in death by his father Gus Wimberly, his mother Lillie M. Swinney and his sister, Barbara  Ann Swinney Holmes. He is survived by his wife Lena of Dallas, TX, his son Terrence “Terry” of Dallas, TX and his son Jamal and wife, Melissa Wimberly of McKinney, TX and their children, Addisyn Ann (his “Peanut”) and his name-sake Carter Ray, (his “PeeWee”).  He is also survived by his four sisters, Linda Allen, Beverly Hawkins, Deborah Ray, Kimberly Ray and one aunt Bobbie Jean Swinney all of Bastrop, LA along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Please leave condolences and share memories on this website.
