Obituary of Sykes, Ronald Lewis

Sykes, Ronald Lewis of Carrollton, TX formerly of New Orleans, LA died Monday, March 17, 2014 at the age of 62 after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Lewis and Billie Lou (Evans) Sykes. He is survived by his loving spouse, Patricia (Juge) Sykes, two children, Stacy Marie Rose (Timothy) and Jonathan Lewis Sykes (Debra). To grandchildren Beth and Matthew (The Keeper) Rose and Ashleigh and Madelyn Sykes, he was Paw-Paw. To sister Diane Peters (Raymond), he was Bubba. He was an inspiration to all of us, including his nieces and nephews. Ron was an engineering graduate of Louisiana State University and a proud Veteran of the Vietnam War. His career with Halliburton Services spanned Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. He enjoyed all music (especially jazz), playing golf, taking and developing photos, and telling a good joke. His sense of humor, evidenced by his big smile, was a source of great levity for all those around him.  A long time member of First Baptist Church Carrollton, Ron cherished his church family. He loved “church.” He was particularly fond of his preacher, Brent, and clearly enjoyed kisses from the ladies on Sunday mornings. His faith in Christ was solid, and he never shied away from expressing it. He always said Jesus loved him more than any one on Earth. Ron was blessed with two long time helpers, Petra and Carmen. They were like family; we are forever grateful for their love and care.  The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses who cared for Ron through the years and a special thanks to those at the Dallas VA whose support was such a blessing. Thank you also to the staff at Season’s Hospice who provided such compassionate care. Visitation is Monday, March 24 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 2400 North Josey Lane, Carrollton, Texas 75006. Funeral service is 10:30 am Tuesday, March 25 at First Baptist Church, 2400 North Josey Lane,  Carrollton, Texas 75006.  Burial will be at 2:00 pm at the DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211, Lane A. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wayne & Theresa Allen Endowment Fund of First Baptist Carrollton, The Sports & Recreation Ministry of First Baptist Carrollton, or the Ron Sykes Memorial Fund at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Please send the family condolences on this website.

  2. Steve & Maria Broadaway says:

    Dear Pat,Stacy and Jonathan,

We were very sad to hear of Ron’s passing. He was a great guy and a true Christian.

As Pat knows, when I graduated from LSU and went to work in Houma Louisiana in Jan 1978, Ron was my first boss.
He was a great guy to work for, serious in his attitude toward work, but always ready to have a good time afterwards.

Ron taught me a lot about life and how we need to appreciate everything God has given us.
Words cannot express how thankful he was for his wife Pat and how she was always supportive of him and helped keep him out of serious trouble. He loved both of his children deeply and was very proud of them.

Ron, Pat, Maria and I were all part of the Halliburton New Orleans Sales team family. We participated in many events and fun times together in the 80’s.
From the annual crawfish boils, to the regular get togethers at friends houses, the annual Mardi Gras event at the Acme Oyster House and the Fats Domino River Cruise, we shared many great times.

Few people know that Ron was the person who came of with the Salesman of the Year Award (SOY) for the New Orleans office. This was awarded to the sales person who did the best job the previous year and the whole sales team would get together to celebrate.

After Ron left Halliburton for a few years he would send me the VOD (Verse Of the Day) by email. Most of the time I would comment on the verse and give him my perspective on how it was appropriate to the way we should be living our lives. Ron became closer to God each day he lived.

Although it is sad to hear of Ron’s passing, it is not really a sad event. God finally decided it was time to call Ron to live with him for eternity.

I know that Ron is looking down on all of us from Heaven smiling as he reads the notes that people are writing about him.

    Sincerely,
    Steve Broadaway

So sorry to hear of your husband passing. I don’t know if this is the Pat Sykes I knew in the 80s at SMU (you worked in University Relations and we worked on The Forum together, me in print shop). If you are the correct Pat, I think of you often and now prayers for you and your family. Becky Brown Horn

  7. Greg Loyacano says:

I met Ron in the mid 70’s just after he graduated from LSU. I guess we clicked right away since we were both “yats.” Pat can explain to the non-yats what that means. Ron and I did a lot of things together and let’s just say most will never be put in writing.
One thing I will share is the time Ron received a $15 gift certificate to Martin’s Wine Cellar. I remember that big smile on his face when he learned that could be 15one dollar bottles and not one $15 bottle.
Ron loved basketball and the Saints. We wore bags on our heads to the Saints games. He also taught me a lot about photography. I remember we would jump in that company car and drive to Pass Manchac to take photos of the sunset over the Pass. We would then have a big catfish dinner with a few at Middendorfs.
Ron was a very intelligent and interesting guy. I have to some smarts to graduate with an Engineering Science degree even if it from LSU. He had a really good sense of humor, loved to laugh and make jokes. He made friends easily. He was a really good guy.
In closing, many know him as Ronald Sykes, but to me he will always be “DA ROCKET MAN.”
