Obituary of
Holt, James Walton
James Walton Holt went to be with the Lord on July 10, 2014. He was born on Dec. 6, 1931 in McLennan, Texas to J W and Alma Kleibrink Holt. When James was 6 years old, his father took a job at a carbon black plant outside of Pampa, Texas. James met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Laura Berry, at Pampa High School where he was a lineman for the Pampa Harvester football team and Laura was the football queen their senior year, 1950. Laura would not marry someone who did not go to college, so James headed off to Texas A&M University to pursue a degree in Accounting. There, he was a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. James and Laura were married on Christmas Eve 1950, after James' first semester at A&M. They both worked in order to put James through college until he graduated in 1954. Afterwards, James took a commission with the Air Force and was assigned to Anchorage, in the Alaskan territory, where he served as an auditor. Later that same year their first child, Loree, was born. James always said that after his service in the Air Force was complete, he would have stayed in Alaska if he could have found a job. James and Laura moved to Farmers Branch, a suburb of Dallas, in 1953 when he took a job with the accounting firm Arthur Young. Their second child, Kriss, was born in 1957. James' auditing job called for frequent travel, and James soon became tired of being away from his growing family so he partnered with Bill Cheney and Howard Conway at Chacon Motors. During this job transition in 1960, Laura was pregnant with their third child Bruce, and worried about the risk of James being self-employed. After many years of struggle as a very small company, the business grew to become a highly respected auto dealership. With the second generation becoming involved in the business, in 1992 the Chacon Motors partnership was split into three companies and James became the sole owner of AutoUSA. James was proud that he built a successful business that supported his children and their families.
He is survived by his loving wife Laura, whom he always referred to as his bride; daughter Loree Anderson, her husband Terry and their son Conner; son Kriss, his wife Kim, and their children Brian, Michelle Nickeson and her husband Daniel; and son Bruce and his daughter Brandy. He is also survived by his sister Jo Ann Sweat, and his brother Kenneth and wife Charlene.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, July 15 at Christ United Methodist Church in Farmers Branch, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Christ United Methodist Building Fund or the DSG Scholarship fund. Please see the church website, www.christ4u.org, for more information.
Please send family condolences and sign the guestbook on this website.

James was a “quiet giant” in our class of 1950 at Pampa High School. He will be missed by all, especially by those of us who had the privilege of knowing him and Laura for so many years since graduation.
