Obituary of Baum, Rudy E.

Rudy Baum died Sunday, March 29 at the age of 93. He was a man who touched many people. Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on April 11, 1915, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1936. In 1941 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for five years as Military Intelligence officer and Media Control Officer in Military Government. He was a member of the liberation force that freed concentration camp survivors in Germany in 1945. For over 45 years he worked in the shoe industry where he served as President of The Southwestern Shoe Travelers and The National Shoe Travelers and as a Board Member of the Two Ten Footwear Foundation. Active in many charitable organizations, Rudy was a steadfast member and former trustee of Temple Emanu-El, board member of The Dallas Holocaust Museum, and long time volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital. In addition, he was a speaker for many groups and symposiums regarding his experiences surrounding the Holocaust. Throughout his life he cherished his many friendships and in recent years enjoyed his life at The Edgemere and his many friends there. He was preceded in death by Hanne, his wife of 63 years, and by his parents who perished in the Holocaust. He was most proud of his loving family and his six wonderful grandsons. He is survived by his son Richard and daughter-in-law Robin, his daughter Diane and her husband Clive Martin, his daughter Karen and her husband Bob Gordon, and his six grandsons Zachary and Ross Baum, Raphael and Gideon Martin, and Matthew and Adam Gordon. He is also survived by his sister Gretel Merom of Haifa, Israel. Rudy will be remembered for his outspoken demeanor and as a loyal friend, caring husband, dedicated father, and proud grandfather. The funeral service will take place Wednesday April 1 at 2pm, Temple Emanu-El, 8500 Hillcrest Road with interment to follow at The Temple Emanu-El Cemetery.
