Obituary of Geraldine Orr

Geraldine (Geri) Orr died Monday, May 9, 2022 from congestive heart failure at Presbyterian Plano Hospital.  Geri was born June 4, 1933 in Oklahoma City to the late Ted Troy and Edith Morrow Tompkins.  She was one of two daughters.  She attended Oklahoma public schools, graduating from Central High School in May 1950.  Geri attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology in 1956.

She met the love of her life, Philip E. Orr, Jr, at the University of Oklahoma.  They married in Oklahoma City June 11, 1952.  The couple moved to Fort Worth, Texas, then to North Richland Hills, where they resided for over 60 years.  They had one daughter, Cynthia, born September 30, 1953.

Geri was a registered medical technologist working for Terrell Labs at All Saints Hospital.  She was a substitute teacher in the Hurst Euless Bedford School District.  She worked for 25 years at the pharmacy her husband owned, Hurst Pharmacy in Hurst, Texas.

She was the leader of a Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls group for 10 years.  She taught children’s Sunday School at Richland Hills United Methodist Church for 25 years and was an active member since 1958.  Geri did genealogy research on her families and wrote and published a Tompkins Family history book.  She gave copies of her book to all of the descendants of her grandparents, Coloma Pearl and Viola Tilley Tompkins, early settlers in Oklahoma Territory.  She worked on the committee that produced a history book of North Richland Hills, Texas.

Geri and Philip attended many pharmacy conventions at different locales in the states.  She loved traveling in Europe and learning the history of different countries.  She shared her adventures vicariously in her Christmas letters that included a short vignette of a recent trip.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, her parents, sister June French, and special cousin Lois Batey.  She is survived by daughter Cynthia Rollow, granddaughter Karen (Andrew) Church, and nephew, David French, as well as her great grand twins, Abigail (Abby) and Adam Church.  Her beloved cat Bernie misses her greatly!

    Cynthia-
Was recently brought to my attention about the passing of Geri. I was very sad to learn this. I hadn’t really kept up with her much since her move to Dallas and my move to Granbury. But I want you to know how much I admire both your mom & dad. And Phil would always make me smile when he greeted me in church as his “favorite pharmacist”. They truly were a blessing
