Obituary of
Lewis, James O.
James O. Lewis, retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at his Benbrook home. Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Benbrook, 1015 McKinley, under the direction of family friend Kate Moore. Interment: noon Tuesday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Benbrook Library, 1065 Mercedes, Benbrook, Texas 76126, or the American Diabetes Association . James was born Sept. 11, 1935, in Moffett, Okla., to the late Barney Bryant and Azel Sullivan Lewis. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service. He then worked an additional 20 years as a machinist for the Postal Service. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, life member of the Benbrook VFW and a Friend of the Benbrook Library. He was an avid reader, gardener, fisherman and hunter, and he loved to jitterbug. His favorite pastime was spoiling his grandchildren. He touched everyone's lives, from his smallest great-grandbaby to the stranger on the street. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed. Survivors: Wife of 52 years, Betty Lewis; daughters, Janet Kaye McCarthy and husband, Jim, and Tamara Sue Lewis-Heggie and husband, Dennis; son, John Bryant Lewis; sisters, Thelma Connelly, Daisy Hutto, Bernice Zemansky and Dorothy Connelly and husband, E.W.; brother, Barney Lewis Jr.; mother-in-law, Eunice Blanche Koons; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren plus three on the way; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
