Obituary of Sweet, Arnold R.

Arnold Sweet passed away at home from complications of Parkinson's disease on September 28, 2011, surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. He was born in Dallas on February 16, 1933 to Clara and Al Sweet, the youngest of two boys. Arnie received his BA and JD from the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as Chief Justice of the Student Court. He was also President of the Dallas Junior Bar Association. Most of his professional career, however, was spent in commercial real estate development. He is survived by Janice, his wife of 54 years, and their three daughters and their husbands: Susan and Seth Kessler, Cindy and Mitch Moskowitz and Cathy and Joel Brook. Other survivors include ten grandchildren who adored their Saba: Amir, Avi, Shir, Asher, Zac, Daniel, Clara, Sam, Eli and Sarah, and his brother and sister-in-law Harold and Marilyn Sweet. Arnie's greatest passions were his family, the Jewish community and the State of Israel, which he served in many leadership roles. He was president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Soviet Resettlement committee. He also served on the national councils of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Council of Jewish Federations, and the Jewish Community Relations Advisory board. He was an active board member and fundraiser for the American Jewish Congress, American Jewish Committee, Anti-Defamation League, Dallas Jewish Home for the Aged, Jewish Family Service, Martin Luther King Community Center, Congregation Shearith Israel, and the Hebrew Free Loan Society. He received a number of significant awards for his advocacy work, including the Federation's Young Leadership and President's award, National Conference of Christians and Jews Brotherhood award, Akiba Academy's Civic Service Award, American Jewish Committee's Community Relations Award, and the Dallas Jewish Historical Society's Ann Loeb Sikora Humanitarian Award. Arnie was also active politically, both as a fundraiser for Democratic congressional and presidential candidates, and as leader of mission trips with elected officials and community members to Austin, Washington and Israel. He was a tireless fundraiser who was in frequent contact with Israeli officials as he worked on their behalf. Texas Gov. Mark White appointed Arnie to the state Health and Human services council. Arnie gave a hand to every worthy cause that crossed his desk. The family extends its deepest gratitude to Darnisha, Chastity, Wanda and Sang his loving caregivers, and to Lindsey at VNA Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 2nd at 1:00pm, Congregation Anshai Torah 5501 W. Parker Road, Plano. Rabbi Stefan J. Weinberg officiating. Donations can made to the Jewish Federation, JFGD.org, Anshaitorah. org or parkinsonvoiceproject.org. Services entrusted to Stephen B. Blend through North Dallas Funeral Home.
