Warthan, James B.


James B. (Bill) Warthan a gentle, loving man, passed away on December 10, 2012, in Dallas, Texas.

Bill was born on November 20,
1930, in Avery, Texas to Earl and
Gertrude Moore Warthan. He was
reared in Avery surrounded by his
warm family. After high school, he
attended Paris Junior College and
Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas. He served in the Texas 49th Armored National Guard, from 1952 to 1959 achieving the rank of Sergeant.

He married Shirley Harper of DeKalb, Texas on August 20, 1954. His early career was spent in the oil and gas and the concrete
industries, including a
Murchison affiliated company when
they started the Dallas Cowboys organization in 1960-61. He loved to tell stories of those first days of the Cowboys and their interaction at the Murchison office. His later career included Vice President, City Concrete, Inc., Wichita Falls, Texas from 1965 to 1970. From 1971 to
1976, he was Vice President of Griffin Ready Mix in Dallas. Texas; after which he spent over 30 years as an independent
swimming pool contractor.
Bill was a 32nd degree Mason, as
well as a Shriner. That initiation
was completed in a joint and honorable process with his father, Earl.

He was a member of the Preston
Hollow Presbyterian Church where
he and Shirley taught youth Sunday
School classes, as well as being a
member of the outreach program to
church visitors. He was active as a coach in Youth Sports programs.

He is survived by his wife for over 58 years, Shirley. Their marriage was blessed with and he is survived by their two children: daughter and her husband, Tanya and Paul
McWhirter, Plano, Texas; son and his wife, Todd and Suzanne Warthan, Tulsa, OK. Five adoring grandchildren; Courtney McWhirter, Austin, Texas; Carly and her husband, Adam Beck, Flower Mound, Texas; Grant,
Andrew, and Kate Warthan, Tulsa,
Oklahoma. He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Linda and Dick Maxwell, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and his niece and her husband, Lana and Lt. Col. Michael Meskunas, Huntsville, Alabama.

Services will be held
at Preston Hollow Presbyterian
Church, 9800 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas at 11:00 am. on Wednesday, December 12,2012 with the Rev. Elizabeth Boone McLean, officiating. A reception will be held at the church after the
service. Burial will be at 4:00 pm at the Texas Historical Warthan Family Cemetery, Avery, Texas.
